In the quest to enhance energy efficiency and achieve sustainability goals, Enginuity Power Solutions is pioneering a unique approach that bridges the gap between technical teams and ESG managers. This collaboration ensures businesses can improve energy efficiency while cutting costs amidst rising energy expenses.
Understanding the Challenge
In many organisations, onsite electrical technicians are tasked with maintaining, fixing, and replacing equipment to keep operations running smoothly. ESG Managers, on the other hand, are looking for ways to demonstrate how the company is achieving efficiency targets and making progress towards net-zero goals. These two critical roles often work in isolation, missing opportunities to collaborate on shared objectives.
Our Solution: A Comprehensive Approach
At Enginuity Power Solutions, we understand the complexities involved in corporate energy management. Our strategy involves a thorough process to ensure both technical and sustainability goals are met efficiently.
- Data Gathering and Analysis
We begin by understanding the whole production process and deploy advanced power analysers and measurement tools to collect detailed data on current energy consumption. Our energy audits are conducted with a practical understanding of AS/NZS 3598:2014. Our data provides a clear understanding of inefficiencies and areas for improvement. - Customised Solutions
Based on the gathered data, we design tailored solutions to optimise energy use. For example, making recommendations for replacing outdated equipment can allow improved management, significant energy savings, less wear and tear on equipment, better efficiency of equipment and power while providing short payback targets on expenditure investment. - Implementation and Monitoring
Once the solutions are designed and approved, we implement them with minimal disruption to operations. Post-implementation, we reanalyse the system to compare the new data with the initial benchmarks. This comparison provides tangible evidence of the improvements and the benefits achieved through our strategies.
Trial Study
We recently had the opportunity to design and implement a trial solution for an aquaculture business, demonstrating the benefits of replacing an asynchronous motor with a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) to reduce energy consumption. Our solution involved integrating a variable speed drive to control water flow more effectively. The initial results were impressive: the optimised motor saved approximately 32,500 kWh of energy per year, achieving a 42% reduction in energy expenditure.
This example illustrates the validity of ABB’s CEO Björn Rosengren’s statement, “the best energy is the energy we don’t waste, but save.”
Our proposed solution also assists the ESG team in meeting their energy efficiency, power reduction targets and net zero goals. Additionally, the innovation introduced by the variable speed drives ensures that existing pumps operate well within the manufacturer’s guidelines, reducing wear and tear on equipment that previously exceeded these limits.
Outcomes from the Trial
The final design, including the variable speed drive, addresses flow issues by allowing better water management. In the existing setup, 19 pumps were operating; with the new design, up to 12 pumps can be switched off when not needed. This leads to a total reduction in energy consumption of 1,178,836 kWh and an annual saving of 212,190 kg of CO₂-e. That’s enough energy to power more than 169 Aussie homes!
Improving energy efficiency is crucial for the transition to net zero, as it directly contributes to significant carbon reduction. Many businesses initially focus on renewable energy generation alternatives to reduce energy costs and demonstrate a commitment to net zero. However, if this aquaculture business were to offset the 1,178,836 kWh of energy using solar power, it would require an approximate 922 kW system, needing between 2 and 3 hectares of land, or more than 3 football fields!
By prioritising energy efficiency, substantial savings and environmental benefits are realised before considering renewable energy options.
