Key Benefits of a Static Var Generator
Here are the primary advantages of implementing a Static Var Generator (SVG) in your electrical system:
- Save Money
- By improving power factor, SVGs reduce kVA demand, leading to significant savings on network charges. Many of our clients have saved tens of thousands of dollars per year.
- No Ongoing Maintenance
- SVGs have no spare parts like contactors or capacitors that need replacement. As long as the device is kept clean, there are no maintenance costs.
- Free Up Electrical Network Space
- Improving power factor frees up capacity on the electrical network, allowing for increased production and the addition of new infrastructure without expensive upgrades.
- Dynamic Load Balancing
- SVGs balance phase currents, reducing peak current and lowering your electrical bills.
Understanding Power Factor
Power Factor is a measure of how effectively incoming power is used in your electrical system, defined as the ratio of Real Power (kW) to Apparent Power (kVA).
- Real Power (kW): Powers equipment and performs productive work.
- Reactive Power (kVAr): Needed by equipment like transformers and motors to create a magnetic field for operation.
- Apparent Power (kVA): The total power supplied, including both Real and Reactive Power.
A high power factor indicates efficient use of electrical power, while a low power factor suggests inefficiencies and higher costs.
To help illustrate the concept of Power Factor, we use a coffee analogy. Imagine a cup of coffee: the coffee itself represents Real Power (kW), which is the actual power used to perform work. The foam on top of the coffee represents Reactive Power (kVAr), which does not contribute to useful work but is necessary for certain equipment to operate. The total volume of the cup, including both the coffee and the foam, represents Apparent Power (kVA).
How SVGs Improve Power Factor
Traditional capacitor banks are often inadequate for modern electrical systems with numerous electronic loads. These systems require a more responsive solution. SVGs provide this by acting as a controlled current source that adjusts in real time to balance the phase angle of current and voltage, achieving a power factor close to unity.
